David Busst (born June 30, 1967 in Birmingham ) is a former English football player . Due to an injury, he had to end his career at the age of 29 and now works as a coach for smaller clubs.

Career

The defender began his career at Moor Green before moving to Coventry City in the English top flight in 1991 . For this club he played over 50 games and became a permanent part of the team. Still, it was never enough for the national team.

On April 8, 1996, David Busst's career came to a tragic end. When Manchester United and Coventry City met, he was seriously injured in a collision with two opponents ( Denis Irwin and Brian McClair ). He suffered open fractures of the tibia and fibula. The game was suspended for 15 minutes as the blood had to be wiped off the lawn. Peter Schmeichel , who saw the injury up close, vomited while on the field and was replaced. He and a few other players even had to receive psychological support after the game due to Busst's shocking injury. David Busst's leg was operated on 26 times, but contrary to some fears, it did not have to be amputated. On November 6, 1996, he announced the end of his career on the advice of doctors.

A friendly match between Coventry City and Manchester United was held in May 1997 in honor of David Busst. He scored a penalty goal in front of a sold out house. The penalty was more or less deliberately blamed by United States defender Gary Neville .

David Busst later worked on Coventry City's staff and coached smaller clubs such as Evesham United and Solihull Borough . He holds several UEFA coaching licenses .
