David Chidgey, Baron Chidgey

(George William) David Chidgey, Baron Chidgey (born July 9, 1942 in Basingstoke , United Kingdom ) is a British politician of the Liberal Democrats .

Early life

Chidgey attended Brune Park County High School (now Brune Park Community College ) in Gosport . He trained as a Chartered Engineer and studied mechanical engineering at Admiralty College in Portsmouth and civil engineering at the University of Portsmouth . He worked for Hampshire County Council until 1973 and then until 1994 as a consulting engineer for Brian Colquhoun and Partners .

Political career

Chidgey was from the mid-1970s until the early 1990s councilor in the city councils of New Alresford and Winchester . In 1988 he stood in a by-election to the European Parliament for the constituency of Hampshire and also ran for the election to the European Parliament in 1989. From 1992 to 1994 he was regional chairman of the Liberal Democrats for Hampshire and Wight .

In the British general election in 1992 he ran for the first time for the constituency of Eastleigh in Hampshire and finished second behind Stephen Milligan , his competitor of the Conservative Party . After Milligan's death in 1994, Chidgey won the by-election that year, pushing the Conservatives to third place. He was re-elected in both 1997 and 2001 . In 2005 he no longer stood for election.

From 2001 to 2005 he was a member of the House of Commons group of chairmen and speakers for the areas of work and education, transport, and trade and economy. From 1999 to 2005 he was a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and from 2003 to 2005 a member of the Joint Human Rights Committee of the UK Parliament.

On the occasion of his departure from the House of Commons, he was raised to life peer on June 17, 2005 as Baron Chidgey , of Hamble-le-Rice in the County of Hampshire , and thereby became a member of the House of Lords . In parliament he was from 2005 to 2006 spokesman for the Liberal Democrats for the defense department.

Chidgey has been a member of the government council of the international non-governmental organization AWEPA since 2007 .

In 2008 he was appointed chairman of the oversight commission for the think tank Commonwealth Policy Studies Unit , which deals with policy issues across the Commonwealth .

Personal

Chidgey married his current wife April Carolyn Idris-Jones in Gosport in 1965 . They have one son and two daughters.
