David Emmanuel

David Emmanuel (born January 31, 1854 - † February 4, 1941 ) was a Romanian mathematician. He is considered to be one of the founders of modern mathematical research in Romania.

Born in Bucharest into a poor Jewish family, Emmanuel received his doctorate in mathematics from the Sorbonne in 1879 (Étude des intégrales abéliennes de troisième espèce). In 1882 he became professor for higher algebra and function theory in Bucharest.

He taught group theory and Galois theory as early as 1888 and published a two-volume textbook on function theory from 1924 to 1927.

His students include Gheorghe Țițeica , Simion Stoilow and Traian Lalescu .

He was an honorary member of the Romanian Academy .
