David Ireland
David Ireland (born August 27, 1927 in Lakemba , New South Wales (now part of Sydney )) is an Australian writer.
Ireland's work is influenced by Laurence Sterne and Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis . He breaks up his novels into loosely linked sequences. His empathetically portrayed characters in the novel reflect the individual's futile search for meaning in an inhumane industrial society.
He received the Miles Franklin Award three times , in 1971 for The unknown industrial prisoner , 1976 for The glass canoe and 1979 for A woman of the future .
