David Kantilla

David Kantilla (* 1938 on Bathurst Island ; † 1978 ibid), also called Amparralamtua in Tiwi language , was the first "thoroughbred" Aborigine to play in one of the top football leagues (SANFL) in South Australia in 1961. He was an Aboriginal Tiwis .

Live and act

Kantilla first played at St. Marys Football Club in the Northern Territory , which promoted Aboriginal players in particular and achieved numerous cup successes. In 1961 he moved to the Panthers South Adelaide and consolidated his position in this team when he prepared 6 goals against the Glenelg Tigers. He played 113 games for the next 6 Seasons. Kantilla represented South Australia in 1964 and 1965 in 4 games against Australian teams from the states. He was twice the South Adelaide Knuckey Cup winner for best and fairest player. In his career with the Panthers he scored 106 goals. He ended his playing career after his stay with the Panthers and went back to the Northern Territory as an advisor to the coach of St. Marys. He was instrumental in the final against Darwin in the 1968/69 season.

Kantilla was killed in a traffic accident on Bathurst Island in 1978 . 27 years later, Kantilla was named one of the players on the team of the century Aboriginal footballers and entered the South Adelaide Football Club Hall of Honor .
