David Laird Dungan

David Laird Dungan ( 1936 - November 30, 2008 ) was Distinguished Professor of Human Sciences and Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville . He specialized in the synoptic problem . As a member of the research team of the “International Institute for Gospel Research” he was a representative of the two-gospel theory , also known as the Griesbach hypothesis.

Life

Dungan was born to Presbyterian missionaries in New Haven, Connecticut . He grew up in Shanghai until 1940 , then in Berea, Kentucky , where he graduated from high school in 1953. He received his BA (1957) from the College of Wooster , his Bachelor of Divinity ( BD ) (1963) from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago and his PhD from Harvard Divinity School (1968). From 1967 to 2002 he was a faculty member in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. There he held courses on biblical studies and church history. He was also invited to give lectures at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome (1976–1977 and 2006).

Dungan passed away suddenly on November 30, 2008 while working on a major multimedia book project called Images of Jesus in Cultural Perspective . His colleagues have written a commemorative publication in his honor.
