David Lewis (designer)

David Whitfield Lewis (born February 19, 1939 in London - † November 9, 2011 in Denmark ) was a designer who became known through his work with Bang and Olufsen .

Life

Lewis grew up in London and attended Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design from 1957 to 1960 . He then moved to Denmark . In 1965 he came to Bang and Olufsen , where he initially worked as a freelancer. He was mainly responsible for the design of audio and video systems. His first work was the Beolab 5000 . He developed the design of the LX and MX video systems, various loudspeaker systems and remote controls for Bang and Olufsen. In the 1970s, he opened his own design studio in Copenhagen , but mostly worked for Bang and Olufsen. His other customers also included L. Goof , Vestfrost , Voss and Electrolux .

His most famous works, the Beocord VX5000 , the Beovox Cona subwoofer and the Beolab 6000 loudspeakers are exhibited in the New York Museum of Modern Art .

In November 2001 he was awarded the title Royal Designer for Industry (RDI). In Denmark he received the Dannebrogorden in 2002 and the Danish Design Council Award 2003. His last work was the Asus NX90 laptop , which he presented at CeBit 2010. Lewis passed away on November 9, 2011.
