David Lopes

David Lopes (born April 17, 1867 in Sertã ; † February 3, 1942 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese Romanist , Lusitanist , Arabist and historian.

life and work

Lopes attended high school in Lisbon. He studied from 1889 to 1892 in Paris at the École pratique des hautes études and at the École nationale des langues orientales vivantes . In 1895 he graduated from the Curso Superior de Letras in Lisbon and became a high school teacher for French. From 1902 he was professor of French at the Curso Superior de Letras and from 1911 (with its incorporation into the university) in the same function at the University of Lisbon . There he taught Arabic from 1914 until his retirement in 1937.

In 1911 Lopes was a co-founder of the Portuguese Society for the Study of History. He was a member of the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa (1915). The Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Lisbon bears his name.
