David Morf (* 1700 in Zurich; † August 15, 1773 in Zurich , town of Nürensdorf ) was a Swiss master builder of the 18th century.

life and work

David Morf was born as the son of the copper engraver Johann Caspar Morf and his wife Elisabeth Zuber. In 1714 he began an apprenticeship as a bricklayer with his future father-in-law David Schneider. In 1723 he married his daughter Anna Schneider. In 1724 Morf started his own business as a master. In 1753 he became a councilor in Zurich, in 1759 a twelve member of the guild of carpenters and from 1763 to 1672 he was chief bailiff in Neunforn .

Its significance for the architectural history of his country lies in the fact that with it the so-called Rococo architecture established itself in Zurich. Morf, who was familiar with contemporary architecture in France and Austria, was considered the most important and busy architect in Zurich in the 18th century.

Morf built the Zunfthaus zur Schuhmachern in Zurich in 1742 , the Zunfthaus zur Meise from 1751 to 1757 , a French wing building with a small courtyard, and from 1766 to 1770 the Haus zur Krone palace (with the Rechberg baroque garden ). His design for the new building of the Helmhaus (1760) was not carried out. In 1767 he was commissioned to renovate the Seehalde country house in Meilen .
