David Rowbotham

David Rowbotham (born August 27, 1924 in Toowoomba , Queensland , † October 6, 2010 in Brisbane ) is an Australian poet whose long career is notable for its scope and energy.

Rowbotham served on the Pacific Frontlines during World War II . He attended the University of Queensland and worked as a journalist for many years . Since he was a friend and mentor to many other Australian writers, he maintained extensive international contacts and traveled regularly to the USA . Although formally lyrical , Rowbotham's poems often deal with history. After Penguin published its Selected Poems , covering a period of 50 years, in 1994, Penguin began a surprisingly late productive period that culminated with the publication of the acclaimed Poems for America in 2002. In 2005 Picaro Press published a popular book called The Brown Island in the Wagtail series .
