David Sainsbury

David Sainsbury, Baron Sainsbury of Turville (born October 24, 1940 ) is a British businessman and politician .

Life

His parents were British entrepreneurs Robert Sainsbury and Lisa Sainsbury. Sainsbury attended Eton College and studied history and psychology at the University of Cambridge . In 1967 he founded the Gatsby Charitable Foundation .

From 1992 to 1997 he ran the UK retail company J Sainsbury . On October 3, 1997, he was raised to life peer with the title Baron Sainsbury of Turville , of Turville in the County of Buckinghamshire , which also includes a seat in the House of Lords . Sainsbury is a member of the Labor Party . From July 1998 to November 2006, Sainsbury was Parliamentary Secretary of State in the UK Department of Commerce and Minister for Science and Innovation in the House of Lords. Sainsbury has been Chancellor of the University of Cambridge since October 2011 . According to US Forbes Magazine , Sainsbury is one of the richest British people. He has joined The Giving Pledge charity .
