David Scharfstein

David S. Scharfstein (* 1960 ) is an American economist .

Career, research and teaching

Scharfstein first studied at Princeton University , where he graduated from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs with a Bachelor of Arts summa cum laude in 1982 . In 1986 he completed his subsequent studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Ph.D. from, while he was supervised by the later Nobel Prize winners in economics, Oliver Hart and Eric S. Maskin .

After a year as an assistant professor at Harvard Business School , Scharfstein returned in 1987 to the Sloan School of Management at MIT. In the meantime he also worked there as an associate professor , and in July 1994 he was appointed full professor . From 1993 to 1995 he was a Sloan Research Fellow . In 2003 he followed a call from Harvard Business School. There he was chairman of the economics faculty between 2015 and 2017 .

Scharfstein worked for the United States Deputy Secretary of the Treasury and the Executive Office of the President of the United States during the Obama administration. He served on the editorial board of the Journal of Economic Literature , the RAND Journal of Economics and the Economics Letters . From 2006 to 2009 he was a director of the American Finance Association , of which he was elected president in 2017.

Scharfstein's main focus is on various topics in the field of finance . In particular, he deals with the regulation of the banking and financial sector, the influence of fiscal policy as well as risk management and private equity .
