American Finance Association

The American Finance Association (AFA) is a scientific society dedicated to the study and advancement of financial knowledge. The current president of the AFA is Campbell Harvey.

history

The association was planned at a meeting in Philadelphia in December 1939 . The American Finance Association's first journal was called American Finance and published in 1942. The magazine was renamed The Journal of Finance in August 1946 and appeared in regular issues from then on. Today the AFA has over 8,000 members.

Purpose, goals

The goal of the American Finance Association is to:

  • promote the association of people with an interest in finance,
  • improve public understanding of financial problems,
  • promoting the exchange of financial ideas through the distribution of periodicals and other media,
  • encouragement to study finance at colleges and universities ,
  • conducting other activities as well as it is appropriate for a professional non-profit organization in the field of finance.

Annual meeting

An annual meeting is held in January in association with the American Economic Association and the North American Winter Meetings of the Econometric Society as part of the Allied Social Sciences Association . The President of the AFA speaks about a chosen topic and various financial research contributions are presented. The AFA and Western Finance Association Meetings are considered two of the most important general finance conferences in the world.

Fischer Black Prize

Every two years the association awards the Fischer Black Prize at its annual meeting , named after the economist Fischer Black , in recognition of an outstanding young academic whose original research has made a significant contribution to the field of public finance.

Brattle prices

The Brattle Prizes are awarded annually at the AFA's annual meeting for excellent research articles on corporate finance .

Smith Breeden Awards

Every year, at its annual meeting, the AFA awards the Smith Breeden Awards to the three best articles in the Journal of Finance in every area except corporate finance.

Morgan Stanley-AFA Award for Excellence in Finance

Starting in 2008, the AFA presents the Morgan Stanley-AFA Award for Excellence in Finance every two years for the intellectual pioneering work of a person in the field of finance.
