David John Teece CNZM (born September 2, 1948 in Blenheim , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand economist and professor and director of the Institute for Management , Innovation and Organization at the University of California, Berkeley . His research areas are strategic management and innovation.

Life

Teece received his Ph. D. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1975 and then worked for Stanford University in 1984 and the University of Oxford until he was appointed Director of the Institute for Management Research at the University of California, Berkeley . He was director of the institute in Berkeley until 1994. In that year he moved to the institute for management , innovation and organization at the same institution. In research he deals with the importance of product and process development, the global environment of companies, technological change and innovations and the organization of industry. A core topic is the marketing of intellectual properties by high-tech companies with the help of licenses and systems of transfer payments under the influence of state tax and competition policies. Teece derived the theory of dynamic capabilities from this.

Teece worked as a consultant for corporations in various industries and from 1989 to 2007 for Mitsubishi Bank . He is a co-founder of the private Berkeley Research Group , a corporate and policy consultancy with offices in 26 countries.
