David Theo Goldberg

David Theo Goldberg (* 1952 in South Africa ) is a philosopher.

Education and career

Goldberg studied philosophy and economics at the University of Cape Town . He received his doctorate in philosophy from the City University of New York . After serving as Professor and Director of the School of Justice Studies at Arizona State University , in July 2000 he was appointed Director of the University of California Humanities Research Institute ( UCHRI ), an institution affiliated with the University of California (UC) in researches in the areas of humanities and art theory.

He has also been appointed to the Faculty of Comparative Literature and Criminology, Law and Society at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) and is a member of the UCI's Institute for Critical Theory.

Prior to his academic career, Goldberg worked as a producer of independent films and music videos, some of which were also aired on MTV . Together with Michael Oblowitz he produced the award-winning film The Island about South Africa.

Research and projects

Goldberg is a leading scholar in the critical theory of racism and is invited by universities around the world to give lectures on the subject.

Goldberg's research spans the areas of political theory, race and racism, ethics, law and society, critical theory, cultural studies, and, more recently, digital humanities.

He initiated the UC's Council for Techniques in Humanities, Art and Social Sciences, which is directly subordinate to the President of the UC regardless of the faculty. He is also a member of the university-wide committee for the control of the management of research information and data (including libraries and digital libraries) of the university.

Together with Cathy Davidson from Duke University , Goldberg founded the organization Humanities, Arts, Science and Technology Advanced Collaboratory HASTAC ("Advanced collaboration between humanities, art, science and technology"). The aim is to promote partnerships between the interests of the humanities, art, social sciences, technology and supercomputer research in terms of research, teaching and public awareness. Davidson and Goldberg have jointly published essays advocating the creative and dynamic application of digital technologies to improve research, teaching and learning in humanities, the arts and social sciences. Both lead the HASTAC-MacArthur Digital Media and Learning Competition ("HASTAC-MacArthur Digital Media and Learning Competition"), an annual international competition to promote transformative learning practices through the application of digital technologies , with prize money of up to US $ 2000 .

Books and publications

Goldberg is the author of a number of books, including The Racial State (2002); Racial Subjects: Writing on Race in America (1997); Racist Culture: Philosophy and the Politics of Meaning (1993); and Ethical Theory and Social Issues: Historical Texts and Contemporary Readings (1989/1995).

He has edited or co-edited several anthologies, including Anatomy of Racism (1990) and Multiculturalism: A Critical Reader (1995), and is the founder and co-editor of Social Identities: Journal for the Study of Race, Nation and Culture .
