David Toub
David Toub (born January 7, 1961 in Newark , New Jersey ) is an American composer .
Toub took violin lessons in his youth and began composing while attending Millburn Junior High School . From 1975 to 1977 he attended composition courses at the Mannes College of Music and studied at the Juilliard School of Music with Sylvia Rabinof , Craig Shuler , Rebecca Scott and Bruce Adolphe .
From dodecaphonic beginnings like Four Landscapes for Six Instruments , which was premiered at the Symphony Space in New York in 1980 by the Ensemble North / South Consonance under the direction of Max Lifchitz , Toub later came to compositions in the style of (post) minimalism . Objects for marimba, piano and electronic organ was the Sequenza 21-concert 2006 by Hugh Sung , Daniel Beliavsky and Bill Solomon in the Elebash Hall of the City University of New York premiered . Toub's music has been increasingly performed, including performances by the Diverse Instrument Ensemble, drummers Bill Solomon and Mike Lunoe, the San Diego New Music / NOISE Ensemble, pianists Stephane Ginsburgh and Nicolas Horvath, and Russian cellist Maxim Zolotarenko, the University of Tennessee at Martin Contemporary Music Group / Stephen Downing, and the Japanese violinist Yuka Matsumoto. Several works have been recorded commercially, including three albums from the OgreOgress label, one consisting exclusively of his works for electronic organ, one with the string quartet mf and another with the piece Dharmachakramudra for viola, cello and vibraphone. Ataraxia , an album with two piano works (quartet for piano, for four), was recently recorded by Stephane Ginsburgh for Maria de Alvear World Edition label from Cologne.
He received AB and MD degrees from the University of Chicago and an MBA majoring in Management Information Systems from Drexel University. Toub is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a Diplomat on the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Since 2008 he has been the Medical Director of Gynesonics, a medical device company in California. In addition, the trained physician worked in Philadelphia for several years as the medical director of Planned Parenthood , was on the board of the American Civil Liberties Union and volunteer for ActionAIDS .
