Rachel Morgan Series / The Hollows
Summary
The Hollows is a fantasy series of 13 volumes that can be assigned to the genres of urban fantasy and humorous fantasy . The last volume of the fantasy series was published in 2015.
In Rachel Morgan's alternate reality, a new type of tomato was genetically designed in 1966, but a bug developed into a virus (T4 Angel) that killed about a quarter of normal human beings. It showed that other, non-human beings have long lived among humans, the so-called Inderlanders: witches , vampires , werewolves , pixies and others. The Inderlanders are immune to T4 Angel and use the resulting chaos to give up their game of hide-and-seek and live openly next to people. Since that time - the change - normal people are no longer masters of the earth. The Inderlanders are far superior to them, which also prevents prosecution by the old authorities. In order to enable equal cooperation, two new agencies are being created in the USA: Inderland Security IS, which consists only of Inderlanders, and the human-occupied FIB (Federal Inderland Bureau). In addition to the normal world, there is a magical level, the ever-after (called Jenseits in German), connected to the normal world by lines of force (ley lines) and the home of demons , elves and witches.
- The elves waged war against the demons thousands of years ago, in which both sides used DNA-altering weapons and suffered corresponding damage. About 2000 years ago the elves fled from the ever-after into our world and mingled with normal people in order not to die out from the damage they had suffered. This also made them receptive to T4 Angel and is said to have been exterminated in the Shift. However, they live underground and are desperately working on genetic treatment to restore their original genome.
- The ever-after species of witches moved into our world around 5000 years ago. Witches look like humans but are non-human and therefore cannot mix with humans. Its origin is explained in the novel Blutnacht ('The Outlaw Demon Wails' / 'Where Demons Dare'): the biological warfare of the elves led to a genetic modification of the demons that gave rise to the witches.
- The Inderland species of vampires was created by a virus that causes a vampire to lose his soul after death, but his body continues to live undead.
- Werewolves come from normal humans who were changed by a demon curse about 6,000 years ago.
Against this background, the witch Rachel Morgan lives in the city of Cincinnati and works for Inderland Security as a 'runner', a special agent for tracking down criminal Inderlanders. However, she is dissatisfied because her boss is giving her less and less jobs. It is not possible to quit because, according to rumors, the IS reacts with murder. When she is about to arrest a leprechaun , she takes the opportunity to have three wishes fulfilled in order to avoid the threat of death and to set up her own business. Together with Ivy, a vampire and IS agent, and Pixie Jenks, who worked for IS as her backup companion, she founded the detective agency 'Vampiric Charms'. Rachel is no ordinary witch. The genetic change made by the elves can mutate and then cause the witch to regress into a demon. Usually the witch child then dies early. Rachel and Trent Kalamack's father researched the genetic consequences of the elven-demon war and managed to ensure that Rachel did not die of this mutation. Gene surgery is banned as a result of the gene virus catastrophe, so all of this was top secret and Rachel did not know what was inside for a long time. Only during a longer stay in the afterlife (blood night) does she find out what she is, why she can work demon magic and she also learns that her children will almost certainly be real demons again.
The books
The novels tell of how Rachel freed herself from the threat of death from IS, how her relationship with Ivy, Jenks and others developed and how she discovers her special features step by step. The stories are a mixture of crime, mystery and action and are (at least in the original) spiced with a lot of puns. In the advertising there are references to "every page full of crackling eroticism", but this was confirmed by some reviews, e.g. B. at Amazon, is described as far exaggerated. The German titles do not reveal the parallelism, but the English titles are, with the exception of the first book, allusions to Clint Eastwood films.
