Dayalbagh or Dayal Bagh ( Hindi : दयाल बाग़, Urdu : دیال باغ) is the name of a district in the north of the city of Agra in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh . The name means something like "garden of grace" ( dayal = grace, pity; bagh = garden).

location

The Dayalbagh district is located in a bend in the river Yamuna, shaped by alluvial sand, about 8 km north of the city center of Agra. The Akbar mausoleum in Sikandra is only 9 km (driving distance) to the west.

history

The almost 5 km² Dayalbagh colony was founded on January 20, 1915 by Huzur Sahabji Maharaj, the 5th guru of the Radhasoami sect, whose spiritual leader Shiv Dayal Singh (1818–1878) the doctrine of the faith in 1861 as a mixture of Hindu , Islamic , Sikhist and Christian ideas. The chosen area was originally almost like a steppe or semi-desert and was gradually built up; Today it includes not only residential buildings for around 3,500 people but also schools, clinics, banks, etc.

In the past few decades, further settlements have emerged in the outskirts, but these have nothing to do with the original social spirit of the founders.

architecture

Temple mausoleum

The construction of the temple ( Radhasoami Samadh ), designed in the British neo-Gothic colonial style, but still unfinished , began in 1908. The core of the building is made of brick , which is clad inside and out with marble and sandstone . The capitals made of colored marble inside the temple mausoleum are of exceptional quality.

Housing estate

The walls of the simple but solid residential buildings of the settlement ( colony ) are also made of brick; However, floor slabs and (intermediate) ceilings are made of concrete . Unlike in India, evergreen bushes and trees were planted in front of and between the houses, so that the whole thing looks a little friendlier; and peacocks were located here. However, much has been neglected today.
