Dieter B. Kapp

Dieter B. Kapp (born February 15, 1941 in Heidelberg ) is a retired German Indologist , linguist and university professor at the University of Cologne . Kapp is known for his work on the tribal societies of South India and as a translator of literary texts from Hindi and Tamil .

Life

In 1960 Kapp graduated from the humanistic Kurfürst-Friedrich-Gymnasium Heidelberg in Heidelberg. 1960 to 1971 he studied Classical Philology , Indo-European Studies (especially Vedic Sanskrit , Mycenaean Greek and Hittite ), Egyptology , Ancient Near Eastern Studies ( Sumerian and Akkadian ), Islamic Studies ( Arabic and New Persian ), Indology (Vedic and Classical Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit ), and modern languages and literatures of India (Hindi, Urdu and Tamil) at the University of Heidelberg . From 1964 to 1971 Kapp worked as a research assistant at Heidelberg University. In 1971 he was promoted to Dr. phil. (Indology, Islamic Studies and Modern Languages ​​and Literatures of India) at the University of Heidelberg and completed his habilitation in 1980 after working as a research assistant (1971 to 1972) and as a research assistant (1972 to 1974 and 1976 to 1982) at the University of Heidelberg. 1983 to 1988 Kapp received a Heisenberg research grant from the German Research Foundation . From 1985 to 1986 he was a visiting professor (subject of ethnology) at the University of Munich . In 1987 he was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Heidelberg and in 1989 received a visiting professorship (subject of ethnology ) at the Free University of Berlin . From 1990 to 2006, Kapp was a university professor and managing director of the Institute for Indology and Tamil Studies at the University of Cologne.

In 1993 he organized and directed “The First International Conference-Seminar on Dravidian Studies”, Stuttgart. From 1999 and 2015 to 2016 he held short-term lectureships (subject of ethnology) at Pondicherry University, Pondicherry (India), as well as at Periyar Maniammai University, Thanjavur (India), each funded by the German Academic Exchange Service.

Dieter B. Kapp is a brother of the dermatologist Alexander Kapp .

Scientific contribution

Kapp's teaching focuses on classical and modern languages ​​as well as literatures of India (Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit; Hindi and Tamil), Hinduism (especially mythology and folk cults). He dedicates himself to the research and documentation of written (Dravidian and Munda) languages ​​as well as cultures of South Indian (Tamilnadu) and East Indian ( Orissa ) mountain and forest tribes. He works interdisciplinary in the fields of philology, general and historical linguistics, ethnology / folklore and archeology. The focus is on documentation of tribal languages ​​and cultures threatened with extinction in various regions of India on the basis of intensive field research. Kapp devoted particular empathy to the cultures, especially of marginalized groups of Indian society. His meritorious willingness to present this not only in scientific media, but also in lectures to a broader public, distinguishes his work.

honors and awards

In 2006, Kapp received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Medal in silver from the Leibniz Society . In 2009 he received the Rabindranath Tagore Culture Prize from the Indo-German Society together with Peter Pannke .
