DeSoto S series

The DeSoto S-series was a series of passenger cars offered by Chrysler under the DeSoto brand name in the model years 1931 to 1942 and 1946 to 1957.

Individual series

SA series (1931-1932)

DeSoto SA Series Cabriolet (1931)

The SA series was the successor to the 6-cylinder series CK series . The cars were introduced at the New York Automobile Show in January 1931 . They had a new six-cylinder engine with 3364 cm 3 displacement and lateral side valves, the 72 bhp (53 kW) at 3400 / min developed. As with the predecessor, the wheelbase was 2769 mm. In addition to the bodies of the predecessor, which were only upgraded by a slightly longer bonnet, a convertible was now also offered. The six-cylinder was manufactured with this equipment until December 1931 (from July as "Model 1932").

SC series (1932)

In January 1932, the SC series was presented, which had been significantly revised: the radiator grille was rounded and the engine had been enlarged. He now had 3569 cm 3 displacement and made 75 bhp (55 kW). The wheelbase had also grown to 2,854 mm. A simple standard and a better equipped custom model were now offered.

SD series (1933)

In December 1932, the SD series was introduced with only minor stylistic revisions. The engine now made 100 bhp (74 kW) with the same displacement. Production ran until December 1933.

S-3 series (1937)

The new S-3 series was introduced in September 1936 and replaced the Airflow and Airstream models. The cars were offered on chassis with two different wheelbases: 2946 mm and 3378 mm. The six-cylinder engines had a displacement of 3738 mm and had an output of 93 bhp (68 kW) at 3600 rpm. from. The bodies were still influenced by the airflow and also had rear wheel covers, but again a vertical grille with a rocket-shaped hood ornament and free-standing headlights. The hood was now hinged at the back instead of the side.

S-5 series (1938)

The S-5 was a revised S-3 series with a new die-cast radiator grille and 3 "longer wheelbases. The wheel covers had been removed.

S-6 series (1939)

The S-6 had headlights integrated in the front fenders and a wider grille decorated with horizontal chrome bars. Instead of the one-piece windshield of the previous models, it had a V-shaped window made of two parts. The spare wheel, the cover of which had previously been visible on the trunk lid, had now completely disappeared under it.

S-7 series (1940)

The hood of the S-7 no longer had a grille; that stretched below between the main headlights and had delicate horizontal chrome bars and a vertical division in the middle. The open door hinges were now covered. All models were equipped with interior heating and ventilation. In addition to the series engine, which had been boosted to 100 bhp (74 kW), there was also an option with 105 bhp (77 kW). A semi-automatic gearbox "Simplimatic" was also available for an extra charge.

S-8 series (1941)

The S-8 had a rear-hung alligator canopy and the bodies became longer and wider. The wheelbases were now 3086 mm and 3543 mm. The radiator grille had instead of horizontal vertical chrome bars ("Rainfall" grill) and the rear window had become significantly larger.

S-10 series (1942)

The styling of the S series was completely revised for the shortened model year 1942. The radiator grille with vertical chrome bars had become flatter and extended over the entire width of the vehicle. The main headlights above, which - when not used - disappeared behind sheet metal caps, gave the vehicle an almost futuristic look. The reamed engine with 3879 cm 3 capacity made 115 bhp (92 kW) at 3800 / min. In January 1942 production was stopped due to the war.
