Building

Entrance pavilion

The station, designed by the architects Goyer, Collette, Hamelin & Lalonde , was created using an open construction method . Its high hall emphasizes lightness and spaciousness, reinforced by the use of light bricks and stones for the walls. This is to create the impression of an ancient city in Italy .

Two escalators each lead from the platforms up to the distribution level . From there, the north-eastern entrance can be reached via a longer tunnel, which has been integrated into an existing building. The closer southwest entrance leads to a brick, glass and concrete pavilion that lets in daylight.

The station hall appears bright and spacious

The platform level with two side platforms is 11.7 meters deep . The distances to the neighboring stations, measured from the end of the station to the start of the station, are 471.60 meters to Jean-Talon and 490.60 meters to Parc . There are connections to three bus routes and two night bus routes operated by the Société de transport de Montréal . Nearby attractions include the Marché Jean-Talon and Parc Jarry .

art

Relief "greengrocer"

30 bas-reliefs designed by Jean-Charles Charuest decorate the platform level. They represent sellers of various groceries and shoppers in the nearby Marché Jean-Talon market hall. The travertine stone used for the reliefs comes from Italy, reminiscent of the neighboring Petite Italie district . The sculptor Maurice Lord transferred Charuest's drawings using a technique he otherwise used for tombstones in the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetery .

history

The station opened on June 16, 1986, along with the section to Saint-Michel . De Castelnau was the southern terminus of the blue line for almost a year, until the opening of the short section to Parc on June 15, 1987. Rue De Castelnau is named after; this was named on December 17, 1914 after the French general Noël de Castelnau (1851-1944), four months after he had successfully defended the city of Nancy against the Germans.
