The line 5 , also called "Blue Line" ( French Ligne bleue ), is one of four metro -lines of the Montreal Metro . It is 9.7 km long and has twelve stations. It was put into operation in stages between 1986 and 1988.
This line is the only one that does not touch downtown Montreal . It runs mainly in a northeast-southwest direction on the back of the local mountain Mont Royal . The arrondissements Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension , Outremont and Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce as well as the area of the Université de Montréal are developed . You can change to Line 2 (Orange Line) at the Jean-Talon and Snowdon stations .
history
During the construction of Line 2, Snowdon Station received a second platform level as a preliminary construction work in 1975 , which remained unused for more than a decade. In 1979 the provincial government decided to build the blue line. The first section to be opened was the Saint-Michel - De Castelnau section on June 16, 1986 . This was followed by the sections De Castelnau - Parc on June 15, 1987 and Parc - Snowdon on January 4, 1988. The opening of the Acadie intermediate station was delayed by almost three months and finally took place on March 28, 1988. Further extensions are planned at both ends of the Route have so far been omitted for financial reasons.
Expansion planning
The Agence métropolitaine de transport (AMT) published the Vision 2020 study in December 2011 . According to this, line 5 is to continue from Saint-Michel in a northeastern direction into the Arrondissement of Anjou . A total of five new stations are planned; the terminus would be at the Galeries d'Anjou shopping center , in the immediate vicinity of a motorway junction.
The extension of the blue line from Snowdon to the southwest has been postponed indefinitely. Would it opened Côte-Saint-Luc , Montreal West , Lachine and the airport Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau . In its Vision 2020, AMT is now considering expanding the suburban railway line along the south bank of the Île de Montréal to connect the airport .
At the Édouard-Montpetit station , the metro crosses the Mont-Royal tunnel . Plans to link the AMT suburban railway running there with the metro were not pursued any further because the difference in height between the two levels is 50 meters.
