history
In 1875 a railway station on the Cape Town - Johannesburg route was built on the farm De Doorns ( Afrikaans for "the thorns"; the name refers to the acacias on the banks of the Hex River) , which over the years grew into a city.
The place is known from a South African legend: The Buffelskraal Farm (today's name: Clovelly ) was the birthplace of Eliza Meiring, a pretty girl. To test her suitors in 1786, they were supposed to bring her a disa (orchid) from the nearby 2247 meter high Matroosberg . The young man she preferred set off but stumbled and fell to his death on the mountain. When Eliza found out about this, she became deranged and was locked in her upstairs room. When she tried to open a window, she also tripped and died.
