De Kelders ( Afrikaans , German roughly: "the basement") is a coastal town that belongs to the municipality of Overstrand in the Western Cape Province in South Africa . In 2011 it had 1,070 inhabitants. The urban area is practically basement with numerous natural caves. One of the caves that gave De Kelders its name is the only cave with a freshwater spring directly on the coast of Africa. It promotes natural mineral water and was discovered in 1798. It is located directly below the De Kelders -Wal lookout point.
Most of the caves can be visited, but the freshwater cave is closed. This cave is privately owned. Thousands of bats live in it .
The view, which you also have from the caves, extends over the entire Walker Bay . This stretches from Danger Point ( Gansbaai ) via Hermanus to Hangklip . On a clear day you can see as far as the Cape of Good Hope .
