De La War Pavilion

The De La Warr Pavilion is an International-style building on the seafront in the small town of Bexhill-on-Sea in East Sussex , United Kingdom . The pronunciation corresponds to that of the American state "Delaware".

history

The pavilion was built according to a design by the architects Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff , who emerged as the winners of an architectural competition, and opened on December 12, 1935. The specifications were seating for at least 1500 people, 200 of them in a restaurant. The cost of construction was £  80,000. This competition was initiated by Herbrand Sackville, 9th Earl De La Warr , who became the namesake of the building.

The pavilion was never completed. The part that should lead to the sea is still missing today.

During the Second World War , the military was stationed in the building in order to meet the Seelöwe company . After the Second World War, the De La Warr Pavilion suffered from deterioration in building materials. From 1991 to 2008 the building was restored by the British architect John McAslan. It has also been expanded to the north and transformed into a center for contemporary art. The De La Warr Pavilion now has one of the largest art galleries on the south coast of England. The total cost of McAslan's project was $ 8 million.

From July to October 2012, a bus hung on the roof of the De La Warr Pavilion to commemorate the final scene in The Italian Job . The design for it came from the British sculptor Richard Wilson.

Some sources consider the De La Warr Pavilion to be the first public building in modern British architecture.

present

Several exhibitions and concerts take place regularly in the De La Warr Pavilion, for example a selection of prints and drawings from the series Der Krieg by Otto Dix in 2014 .

There is also a souvenir shop and a restaurant. According to the company, more than 350,000 visitors come to the pavilion every year.
