Serge Chermayeff

Serge Ivan Chermayeff (born October 8, 1900 in Grozny , Russian Empire , † May 8, 1996 in Wellfleet , Massachusetts ) was an American architect .

Life

The son of a wealthy Jewish family who owned an oil company, he moved to England at a young age. In the 1920s he studied art and architecture, including in Germany. After graduating, he first worked as an interior designer for a London company. He later became a partner of the German architect Erich Mendelsohn , with whom he created important buildings of modern British architecture, including the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea . In 1940 he emigrated to the USA , where he worked as director of the Institute of Design in Chicago . He later became head of the architecture department at Harvard and Yale Universities .

Chermayeff had two well-known sons: Ivan Chermayeff , who died in New York City in 2017, was the designer of brand logos, such as National Geographic and Mobil Oil . Peter Chermayeff is an architect known for his aquariums .
