Dead Samaritan is a Finnish death and thrash metal band from Tampere , which was founded in 2001 under the name The Beauty of Dying .
history
On January 4th, 2001 the guitarist Marko Saarinen and the drummer Janne "Homicide" Honkanen discussed the formation of a band during a festival in Hämeenlinna . Since Saarinen had already played in other bands with the singer Pasi "Putte" Lehtinen, he brought him in for the vocal post. The bass player was Markus Maltari aka Marcus Moberg, whom the other members already knew from previous bands. About six months later, Teemu "Antinist" Raunio joined as a second guitarist. In September a first demo , First Kill , was recorded and chosen as the band name The Beauty of Dying. In 2002 more rehearsals followed, as well as the recordings of a second demo under the name Dark Matter . In addition, the first gig was held, namely on the Hellbound III in Lahti in March 2002. In 2003, Raunio was replaced by Jussi Leppänen and the band name was changed to Dead Samaritan. Afterwards, rehearsals were held regularly and new songs were written. After further rehearsals, the next demo was released in July 2004, Bone Hill Revelation , which had an edition of 200 copies and was the first with a new band name. The demo allowed the band to increase its popularity, which is why 2005 was mainly spent performing in concerts. Later that year Leppänen left the group, whereupon he was replaced by guitarist Eetu Tingander. Then the band gave their last concert for the time being in the same year at the Rocklinna Metal Fest in Hämeenlinna. At the beginning of 2006 the bassist Maltari got out. Since Tingander had new song ideas, but Saarinen had no motivation and was also too busy with work and studies, the band took a creative break that lasted throughout 2007. In 2008 Saarinen and Honkanen resumed activity by playing some old demo recordings together. Rehearsals followed in the following year and new songs were worked on. In December the line-up was also completed, which now consisted of Saarinen and Honkanen, the singer Valendis Suomalainen, the guitarist Matti Viholainen and the bassist Eero "Deathholic" Virtanen. The next demo followed in 2010 under the name Counting the Body Toll , which was produced by Henri Virsell and recorded in his studio. In addition, the band appeared for the first time in the same year with a new line-up in Tampere together with Nation Despair. In the same year further concerts were then held. The band also took part in the sampler DOP 3 with the song Laid to Waste . In 2011 work on further material was continued, so that there was almost enough for a studio album. They were also still present live, a concert was recorded. In May a contract was signed with The Pain Fucktory Promotion & Booking Agency for a few months to increase awareness in South America . At the end of 2012 the British label Casket Music released the debut album The Only Good Samaritan… . In 2013 the band achieved a worldwide doctoral contract with Metal Revelation from Denmark . In addition, the recordings for the second album began in November, which was released in September 2014 with the title The Devil Tunes . In August the band was also featured on the sampler Five Ways to Die by The Pain Fucktory Records ( Peru ) with three remastered songs from the demo release Counting the Body Toll . Because Honkanen injured his foot at a band party in January 2015, the group was barely active that year. The group has been holding a few national appearances since 2016.
style
Neil Arnold of metalforcesmagazine.com wrote about The Devil Tunes that the album is suitable for fans of classic Thrash Metal in the style of Kreator or Nervosa . The singing sounds rough and angry. The songs are mostly fast, short and aggressive, although medium-paced passages are always interspersed. The album also has Death Metal influences. André Gabriel from Metal.de also reviewed the album. He noted the average quality of the pieces. When he heard the songs, he was reminded of the Finnish band Nocturnal, because both groups have female vocals in common, which dispense with clear vocals. In contrast to Nocturnal, Dead Samaritan lapsed vocally into Death Metal areas several times. The songs are often fast, but are always interrupted by groovy elements.
