The Deakin Bay is a large bay between the Horn Bluff and Cape Freshfield on the East Antarctic George V. Coast .
It was roughly mapped during the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . Mawson named it after the politician Alfred Deakin (1856-1919), three times Prime Minister of Australia. Maps that were created during the United States Exploring Expedition (1838–1842) under the direction of the American polar explorer Charles Wilkes , identify them as Peacocks Bay , named after the research ship USS Peacock .
