The Horn Bluff is a striking cliff on the north coast of an island that lies on the western flank of Deakin Bay off the East Antarctic George V coast . The cliff rises up to 325 m and is characterized in the upper part by columnar structures of dolerite .
It was discovered and mapped during the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . Mawson named it after the Australian mining entrepreneur William Austin Horn (1841-1922), a sponsor of the research trip . The island location could only be identified on the basis of aerial photographs taken in 1962 as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions .
