Debating Club Stuttgart

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Debattierclub Stuttgart ( DCS ) is the German and English-speaking debating club of the University of Stuttgart . It was founded in 2004 and is now one of the most successful international clubs in German-speaking debating . Among other things, the DCS is vice world champion and provided the world's second best speaker in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at the 2010 World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC); DCS presented in WUDC 2011 the fourth-best speakers in the world in English as a Second Language ( English as a Second Language , ESL) and the best speakers in the world in EFL.

history

After a few months of informal meetings, the DCS was founded in 2004 on the initiative of Thorsten Rogowski as a student university group at the University of Stuttgart in the form of a non-profit association and incorporated into the university's general studies and the umbrella association VDCH . The purpose of the association is to develop a democratic culture of debate and to impart rhetorical skills. This is achieved through regular training in rhetorical methods and skills and subsequent debates. Participation in and hosting speech contests also help achieve these goals. DCS members therefore regularly take part in national tournaments such as the German Debating Championship ( DDM) and international tournaments such as the WUDC and the European Universities Debating Championship (EUDC).

activities

In 2003, the DCS hosted the Baden-Württemberg University Debate Championship (BaWü), in 2008 the South German Championship (SDM) and in 2010 and 2011 a ZEIT debate with over 100 participants each. Also in 2011 the DCS hosted its first international tournament, the Stuttgart IV 2011. The tournaments were all held in the British Parliamentary Style format . The club also regularly organizes friendship tournaments and show debates, such as B. in May 2011 in Stuttgart City Hall.

Since 2009, the DCS has offered rhetoric and argumentation training every semester as part of the key qualifications of the University of Stuttgart. Seminars and a. for other debating clubs, companies, youth organizations of political parties, scholarship holders of the Baden-Württemberg Foundation and summer students at the University of Oxford complete the offer.
