In 1914, for the third and last time, an international exhibition focused on hygiene and urbanism was held in Lyon. The curator of the exhibition was Jules Courmont , a doctor and professor at the Medical School of Lyon. The architect of the exhibition site was Tony Garnier .

The exhibition was opened to the public on May 1, 1914 and officially opened on May 12, 1914 by the Minister of Commerce, Raoul Péret, in the presence of Édouard Herriot . After Germany declared war on France on August 3, the exhibition stayed open, but visitor numbers fell because most of the civil long-distance trains were no longer running. The exhibition ended on November 11, 1914 after attracting over a million visitors.

The exhibition took place mainly in Lyon's Gerland district in the Halle Tony Garnier and on the site of what is now the École normal supérieure de Lyon , but the main entrance was at the southern end of the Presqu'île peninsula , where there was also an Alpine village .
