DefCon (computer game)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

DefCon (stylized DEFCOИ ) is the third title by Introversion Software , which was released on September 29, 2006. It is a real-time strategy game that deals with the theme of nuclear war . Each of the up to 6 players takes over a continental land mass (e.g. Africa or North America) and tries to assert himself against the others in the thermonuclear war.

Gameplay

A normal round in DefCon takes about 45 minutes. The player has a world map held in the computer style of the 1980s. The aim of the game is to achieve the highest number of points by inflicting the greatest possible damage on your opponent while avoiding your own losses. The military units and buildings are set up in the respective sphere of influence in order to attack the enemy and protect their own cities.

Lap schedule

The game consists of five phases ( DEFCON levels), which give the player time to plan his approach precisely. The round begins with “DEFCON 5” and ends with “DEFCON 1” (there are approximately 6 minutes between each phase). In addition, a “Victory Counter” ends the game automatically if a minimum number of remaining nuclear weapons is not reached during “DEFCON 1”. The following applies:

  • DEFCON 5: Build buildings and station units.
  • DEFCON 4: bring units into position.
  • DEFCON 3: Scout opponents and attack conventionally (no nuclear weapons allowed).
  • DEFCON 2: Same as phase 3.
  • DEFCON 1: Nuclear missiles can now be launched from the silos, from submarines or bombers.

building

  • Radar: The radar makes enemy units and missiles visible on the world map.
  • Airport: With the help of the airport it is possible to send bombers and fighter planes into battle. Lost fighter planes will be replaced over time. There is also a limited reserve of nuclear warheads for returning bombers at each airport.
  • Silo / SAM: This building has two different functions. On the one hand, it can launch ICBMs and, on the other hand , it can protect the player's area from enemy planes and missiles - but not both at the same time.

Mobile units

  • Combat pilots: Combat pilots are good for exploring enemy territory because the range of the radar is limited. Fighter pilots can also attack enemy units.
  • Bomber: This aircraft is armed with a short-range missile that can be fired from DEFCON 1 and has conventional weapons to attack ships.
  • Battleships: Battleships can attack both ships and aircraft and are good escorts for aircraft carriers.
  • Aircraft carrier: They function like a mobile airport, but have fewer bombers and fighter planes that are not replaced if they are lost. In addition, aircraft carriers can detect enemy submarines with sonar and destroy them with depth charges.
  • Submarines: This unit has multiple medium-range missiles and can only be detected by enemy submarines and searching aircraft carriers or when surfacing to launch missiles.

Relation to the movie WarGames

The graphic presentation of DefCon is largely based on the film WarGames - War Games from 1983. In this anti-war film, a young hacker takes control of the American nuclear arsenal without first knowing it. He assumes that he has started a computer game called Global Thermonuclear War and almost triggers a real nuclear war.

In Uplink , the first game by Introversion, there is (as an Easter Egg ) a "Protovision Game Server" (Protovision was the company that the young person wanted to hack in the film), on which Global Thermonuclear War can be "played" in a simplified form can.
