Uplink is the first computer game from the Introversion Software company . It was published on September 30, 2001 and simulates the Internet in 2010. It was named after the uplink in computer networks . It is available for Windows , Linux , Android , iOS and MacOS . The game has the subtitle Trust is a weakness , which means trust is a weakness .

action

As a hitherto unknown hacker , the main actor, who you have to name yourself, registered with the Internet company Uplink AG in 2010 , where he hacked into global computer systems on the Internet and local networks for various clients . Uplink AG acts as an agent for orders and is also the only dealer. The jobs give you money and reputation with which you can rise in rank and thus get more difficult, but also better paid jobs. However, care must be taken and hurry with orders so that you are not traced by the companies you hack into. If you do, you will be arrested and lose the game. Since the current score is always saved immediately, you would have to start all over again. After a while, the main character receives an email with the so-called Revelation virus. At this point you have the opportunity to fulfill orders for two different organizations that want to destroy the Internet or protect it from the virus. If you protect the internet, you have won the game and can continue playing with the end open.

control

The game is controlled via a GUI , through which all important functions can be carried out. If you hack into someone else's computer, programs can show you how long you have time for the hack. Various expensive programs and upgrades can help avoid being discovered by most companies later. The computer systems are simulated realistically. Among other things, it is possible to shut down the computer with the “shutdown” command or to delete files and logs with “delete” commands .

Easter eggs

Uplink contains numerous Easter eggs and allusions. For example, a computer from the company “Protovision Software” can be found on which the game “Global Thermonuclear War” can be played. The password for this is Joshua . This is based on the movie WarGames - war games , in which this game almost ends with the annihilation of humanity. In addition, there is the real company InterNIC .

Versions

Since the source code for the game can be purchased on a developer CD, a very active community has formed around the English version, which continues to actively maintain the game together with the developers. The latest version for Linux or Windows of Uplink is 1.55 from March 19, 2007, for Mac OS X 1.6.0 from May 6, 2008. On March 30, 2012, a version for the Apple iPad was also released. An Android version is also available.

The German translation of the company SAD had various program errors since it appeared in the summer of 2005. B. with umlauts in the Linux variant and program crashes that made it impossible to achieve one of the two game goals. It took SAD some time to submit patches for the most serious problems. The game is no longer offered. Since the German version is completely independent, the English updates do not work here.
