history

CAPTOR-E, DSEI-2019

Between 1976 and 1991, the British Army and the British Royal Navy alternately held their equipment shows in Aldershot and Portsmouth , respectively . Overseas delegations only attended the fair by invitation, while governments that do not pay so much attention to human rights received invitations . Despite the war with Iran , a delegation from Iraq also visited the fair.

From 1993 the two fairs were merged and held annually until the British government decided to privatize the fair. Spearhead started the first DSEI in 1999 at Chertsey , Surrey . In 2001 the fair moved to the ExCeL Exhibition Center in London Docklands. This was followed by the renaming of Defense Systems & Equipment international to Defense & Security Equipment International .

criticism

The state DESO published the official invitation list for the DSEI, with a subsequent list, which was approved by the organizers. Many of the invited countries are accused of disregarding human rights.

Protests

The fair drew the attention of many anti-arms trade activists. Ken Livingstone , Mayor of London from 2000 to 2008, is a critic of the DSEI, the London police especially criticize the costs of the security measures caused by the fair.

At the September 2013 exhibition in London, exhibitors MagForce International (from France) and Tian Jin MyWay International Trading (from Beijing, China) offered leg irons and electric batons in catalogs. Such items are considered "not wanted" under UK law. After Green Party MP Caroline Lucas made this public, the booths of the two companies in the ExCel Center in London's Docklands were cleared.
