Defense Switched Network

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Defense Switched Network ( DSN ) is a global communications network operated by the US military that is not accessible to the public . The Canadian armed forces also have access to this network in order to use it for their own purposes ( CSN, Canadian Switched Network ).

Overview

It is the predominantly used information transfer system of the Defense Information Systems Network (DISN) , the backbone of the US military information network . The DSN provides a wide range of telecommunications services for the command and control elements of the United States Department of Defense and its subordinate departments in the areas of logistics, personnel management, reconnaissance and maintenance as well as some other government agencies. In practical terms, this means that almost every military unit in the United States worldwide has a connection to the DSN .

The DSN was established in 1982 as a long-haul communications network by the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) and the Office of the US Secretary of Defense . It was intended as the main communication system in peacetime, in times of crisis, in the acute phase shortly before an attack, in non-nuclear conflicts and for the phase after an attack. The new network replaced the old Autovon network.

The DSN is made up of four systems: switching, transmission, clocking & synchronization as well as network management. The mediation of the DSN consists of multifunctional independent transit switching, exchange switching and long-distance switching. The transmission, timing and control elements of the DISN are used in order to be able to connect all military locations worldwide with voice, fax, data and video conference services .

In addition to these services, the DSN supports

STU-III
  • the Secure Telephone Units, Third Generation ( STU-IIIs ) , special telephones designed by the US government that, when connected to the same model, can encrypt calls at the push of a button,
STE
  • the more modern Secure Terminal Equipment units (STE), which work similarly to the aforementioned, but are ISDN- compatible and only work with a preprogrammed encryption card,
  • the Defense Red Switch Network (DRSN) , a pure voice transmission network for exclusively secure connections between tactical participants and satellite connection points,
  • establishing the connection to the insecure IP router network ( NIPRNet ),
  • establishing the connection to the secure IP router network ( SIPRNet ),
  • Access to the Government Emergency Telephone System ( GETS) .

Numbering plan

The dialing procedure and the number allocation system is the same as in the North American numbering plan : After a three-digit area code, there is a three-digit regional code ( prefix ) and then the four-digit subscriber number ( suffix ). In one place (e.g. Mannheim and Kaiserslautern) several regional codes can exist at the same time if there are several US institutions there.
