The Defensie Grondgebonden Luchtverdedigingscommando (DGLC) ( German  Ground Air Defense Command ) is part of the Dutch Land Forces Command and is stationed in the Lieutenant General Best Barracks in Vredepeel Municipality of Venray . The DGLC was set up for air and missile defense on 29 March 2012 and took over the tasks of the command Fla artillery of the Koninklijke land forces and missiles group of Koninklijke Luchtmacht . The command works with mixed personnel from the land and air forces as well as the Patriot, NASAMS and Stinger weapon systems. The DGLC has its own education and training unit and a competence center.

On April 4, 2018, the German anti-aircraft missile group 61 in Todendorf with its MANTIS and Ozelot weapon systems was operationally subordinate to this Dutch command. The command of the troops is carried out by the German air force command .

structure

The Defensie Grondgebonden Luchtverdedigingscommando (DGLC) consists of two squadrons, a German group and a battery. These units protect important objects, units and areas against threats from the air. There are also two centers.

  • 800 Support
Squadron The 800 Squadron provides the units for communication and logistical support and is responsible for the education and training of the personnel and the maintenance of the equipment.
  • 802 Squadron
The 802 Squadron provides missile and air defense for the units, areas and / or vital objects. The squadron has PAC-3 Patriot systems and their command elements.
  • 13 Air defense battery
This air defense battery protects against air attacks by planes or missiles, but can also indicate where a target is (target search). The battery has NASAMS, Fennek Stinger weapons platform, TRML and Sentinel systems for this.
  • Education and training center
The education and training center offers courses and supports training for (inter) national ground-based air and missile defense units.
  • Competence center for
building and imparting knowledge on air defense.

history

The ground-based air defense command was created in 2012 by merging the guided weapons group (Groep leide wapens) of the Koninklijke Luchtmacht and the Fla-Artillerie Kommando (Commando Luchtdoelartillerie) of the Koninklijke Landmacht . The goal was rationalization and more efficiency.

The first units of the anti-aircraft artillery command arrived at Air Force Base De Peel in 2007. The guided missile group was already stationed there. In 2009 the decision was made to make one unit out of the two. The constellation took place on March 29, 2012. The Peel Air Base was then renamed Lieutenant General Best Barracks .

Calls

As separate army and air force units, the air defenders were deployed several times, including in Israel and Turkey during the Gulf War, in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The first use for the new DGLC took place one year after it was founded. As of January 2013, 2 Patriot air defense systems protected the Turkish city of Adana and its residents from possible rocket attacks from Syria.

German-Dutch cooperation

The subordination of the German FlaRak Association under Dutch command takes place within the framework of Green Apollo. Two goals are to be pursued with this: The formation of a task force of the ground-based air defense forces in the immediate and immediate area and a bi-national competence center for the further development of these skills in Vredepeel. The Apollo Cooperation Agreement was signed in August 2017. It came into force on April 4, 2018.

The German anti-aircraft missile group 61 has been under the direction of the DGLC since then. The group consists of around 300 soldiers and has radar-controlled cannon and missile systems. The German unit is still housed in the German death village. However, some German colleagues have strengthened the competence center and the education and training unit of the DGLC. The German and Dutch air defense units are also investigating how they can work together more intensively on doctrine, training and knowledge sharing. A German-Dutch competence center has been set up for the latter area. This is intended to help improve the combat against manned and unmanned flying aircraft and ballistic missiles.

Weapon systems

  • Patriot
The PAC-2 Patriot system is suitable for air defense up to an altitude of approx. 20 kilometers. The PAC-3 variant also offers protection against ballistic missiles.
  • NASAMS
NASAMS stands for Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System. This system uses the AMRAAM missile, which was originally an air-to-air missile but is now usable as a surface-to-air missile. It is used against air targets up to a distance of 30 kilometers. It is a missile that is guided with a (Sentinel) radar.
  • Fennek Stinger Weapon Platform
The Fennek Stinger Weapon Platform is a Fennek reconnaissance vehicle for air defense. It is equipped with a launcher for four stinger missiles. The range is approx. 5 km.
  • TRML radar
The TRML-3D / 32 radar is used for target tracking. This radar has an adjustable search range of 30 to 200 kilometers.
  • Sentinel
The AN / MPQ-64 "Sentinel" radar system controls the NASAMS missiles.
