Defrage was an alternative metal band from Estonia founded in 2007 . The band name is derived from the two English words "Def" (great or cool) and "Rage" (anger or anger). They became known for their concept of "all-time touring band", which describes the exclusive sale of their CDs on the street during and at any time outside of the tour.

history

Defrage was founded in spring 2007. The first band rehearsal soon followed. In the beginning the band played without a singer, while Kari Kärner was looking for a suitable singer. Argo Ollep took over this role a few months later. The band's composition changed as early as 2008: Mikk Künnapas was replaced by Daniel Leppsoo's change to solo guitar, Andres Arens replaced Sten Õitspuu and Artjom Jevstajev came for the retiring Argo Ollep. Kaspar Peterson was added as a bass player.

In 2011 a fundamental new line-up for Defrage was announced: except for Kari Kärner and Andres Arens, all members left the band. Andre Kaldas (screaming vocals), Aleks Ohaka (solo guitar) and Joonas Uus (bass) joined the band. Argo Ollep could be won back as a singer.

The debut album Jackal , which also includes Hotel Breakers , was released in 2011. From the beginning of 2012 Defrage toured Europe. At the beginning of 2013 the album Jackal was re-released in a revised version. In May 2013 Defrage released the second album The Sick Letter , which was produced without a label like the debut album.

Again in January 2014 the composition of the band changed. Andres Arens and Aleks Ohaka left the band, followed by Kevin Presmann on drums and guitarist Grigori Rõžuk. On March 26, 2014 Defrage released the single Cold Winter , which announced the third album Towards Endless 8 . On May 20, 2014, the second single La Bruja followed .

At the beginning of June 2014 Joonas Uus left Defrage without public announcement . In the fall of 2014, lead singer Argo Ollep announced his exit due to problems within the band. The Defrage project has been suspended since then.

The four remaining band members together with Henrico Krebes and bassist Rainer Trillo formed the band Illumenium from November 2014 , which continued the idea of the permanent tour from March 2015.

Instead of the planned third Defrage album, Illumenium released a demo album Towards Endless 8 in 2015 . It mainly contains newly recorded Defrage songs. The album Gehenna was released in 2018 .

For the video clip of the song Save Us from Religion , the band received the Estonian MTV Music Award in the category "Best Music Video" in 2009.

Jackal

The 2011 debut album Jackal was recorded in 2010/2011 in the Zorg Sound Laboratory. In early 2011 the album was released in Estonia. Toomas Paidra is the producer of the album. The music style is a mixture of hard rock and alternative metal. The song Hotel Breakers refers to an old band history: Through several "hangover parties" after their concerts, at which not a few hotel rooms were devastated and their facilities destroyed, Defrage became known and was ultimately listed on the "black list" of Estonian hotels. The band wrote the song in order to finally be able to finish with the topic. The songs show a difference between each other: One part sounds a bit harder, with more e-guitar sound and screaming, as you can hear with Etiquette , Abortion or Put Your Money In Your Ass . In contrast, Stairway To No Heaven or One World, One Dream are kept very quiet, the inserted effects carry the song more and the melodies flow more. The quieter phases in the individual verses are also noticeable, while the refrains come back loud, strong and powerful. There are new, different styles of music in every song, which makes every song unique.

As a cover version you can find the song Infinity 8 as a metal version at Jackal , which originally comes from the British Guru Josh Projekt .

The Sick Letter

In 2013, The Sick Letter , Defrage's second album, was released. It was also recorded in the Zorg Sound Laboratory in collaboration with Toomas Paidra, like the debut album before. In early 2013 the album was released in Estonia.

The music video We Are Metal refers to Egyptian mythology and shows how the individual band members rise as mummies from a sarcophagus in 3013 , awakened by the goddess Bastet (goddess of fertility). The song deals with the immortality of music, e.g. B. Mozart or Beethoven , whose music is still heard a hundred years after their death. They equate themselves with this, their music is immortal just like the music genre Metal . Furthermore, the style of music changes in contrast to the debut album. Here you can divide the songs into two areas: Once in harder-sounding metal songs, with more guitar sound and screaming, as you can hear with The Sick Letter or We are Metal . In contrast to this, Bonfire Song , Lullaby or the ballad Anti-Ballad , which shouldn't actually be a ballad, are kept very calm and emotional. There are also far fewer screaming sounds from Andre Kaldas. Newly added is the background vocals of the second voice by guitarist "Kari Karner". In addition, Defrage and Bulgaria sing about the country Bulgaria. Here personal experiences of the band are used as a background, which is otherwise only found in the song Hotel Breakers from the first album.

The cover version of The Sick Letter includes the song Video Games , which originally came from the pen of the American Lana Del Rey .

At The Facebook they have edited individual appearances of the band, including the Nova Rock Festival. The music video for The Sick Letter was shot in a German hotel.

Different versions

The two albums Jackal & The Sick letter are available in limited numbers as paper sleeves. The standard version is in a standard plastic cover.

Festival appearances

The biggest performance and at the same time their first festival concert was in the summer of 2011 at the Nova Rock Festival in Austria. There they also performed in 2013. Further festival appearances followed, e.g. B. at "Der Schiffenberg rocks" 2013, Open Circle Festival 2013, Free Tree Open-Air 2013, Free and Easy Open-Air 2013, and the Open Circle Festival 2014.
