The dyke obligation or dyke load is part of the dyke law . The dyke obligation serves to maintain and secure the dykes .

The proper dyke load was previously with the landowners who came into contact with the dike. In the Artlenburger Deichverband, for example, all residents of the association area are obliged to help with protective work and to provide equipment, means of transport and building materials. Furthermore, the landowners in the association area are obliged to guard the dike .
