Delsey McKay

Delsey McKay (* 1924 in Pittsburgh ; † December 5, 2004 in Shadyside (Pittsburgh) ) was an American jazz pianist , singer and songwriter .

McKay achieved her artistic breakthrough when she came to New York in the late 1960s and was discovered and promoted in the local jazz scene by the British musician Peter McDonough. This was followed by recording sessions for Decca Records in London, where she had a minor hit with the song Hold Her Hand a Little Higher , a tribute to the Statue of Liberty written on the day of Martin Luther King 's assassination ; however, the song did not appear in the United States. In 1968 she appeared in the television show series Soul! on. She toured Europe in the 1970s. In 1973 she recorded the single I Have Never Been to California for Decca ; In 1974 the song I've Been There was released on London Records . To mark the 200th anniversary of the United States, she wrote Sing American Sing , which was placed in the archives of the United States Congress . She died at the age of 80 in Shadyside, a suburb of Pittsburgh.
