Demba Ali "Jamanka" Jawo (* 1950s in Choya ) is a journalist and politician in the West African state of Gambia . From February 2017 to June 2018 he was Minister of Information and Communication in the Adama Barrow cabinet .

Life

Journalist Jawo started working as a freelance reporter for The Daily Observer in the 1990s . He later rose to the position of editor. He lost that post when the newspaper was sold to President Yahya Jammeh in 1999 . He then got a two-year contract as editor -in- chief of The Independent newspaper . After this appointment, Jawo was employed full-time as President of the Gambia Press Union (GPU). During this time he wrote a column for The Independent - until the newspaper was banned in 2006 by government regulations. On February 22, 2017, the newly elected President Adama Barrow appointed Jawo to his cabinet as Minister of Information and Communication . After his appointment, he said:

"... he will use his tenure to help reinvent Gambia's troubled media landscape would as an effective contributor to improving the country's democratic credentials."

"... he wants to use his term in office to help reinvent the troubled media landscape of Gambia as an effective contribution to improving the country's democratic qualifications."
