history

The GPU was founded in November 1978 by a group of journalists led by journalist and publisher Dixon Colley (1913–2001). With the group belonged Deyda Hydara (1946-2004), Melville B. Jones (1918-1992) and Pap Saine . It was registered under the Trade Union Act , Cap.188 , on April 20, 1979 .

Mr. Jawo's two three-year terms expired in 2004. But the Congress to elect a new Executive Council was postponed because of the legal battle to abolish the Media Commission Bill , so it stayed until 2005.
