Ndey Tapha Sosseh

Ndey Tapha Sosseh (born July 27, 1979 in Banjul ) is a Gambian - Malian journalist. She was President of the Gambia Press Union (GPU).

Life

Ndey Tapha Sosseh is the daughter of human rights activist and educator Adelaide Sosseh Gaye and of Mustapha Sosseh. Her father died unexpectedly in 1979 when her mother was three months pregnant.

She began her career in journalism in June 1998 with the Daily Observer . She was initially a reporter and editor there.

From 2000 to June 2004 she was in Great Britain for further training. Sosseh studied at the University of Central England in Birmingham and obtained her Masters in International Press Journalism . She enjoyed further education at Warwickshire College .

After her return, she became editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper The Daily Observer in August or December 2004 , making her the first editor-in-chief of a daily newspaper in Gambia. In January 2005, she handed over the position of editor-in-chief to Momodou Sanyang .

From April to December 2005 she worked for the Medical Research Council and then for the Association of Development Consultants.

At the end of March 2005, Sosseh was elected General Secretary of the Gambia Press Union (GPU). In March 2008, Sosseh was elected the new president of the GPU because her predecessor Madi MK Ceesay was no longer available for another term. She was replaced by Bai Emil Touray in 2011 .

From June 2009 to October 2017 she was in exile in Bamako (Mali). Meanwhile, she was charged with treason in Gambia in 2011. According to her statement, the Gambian government under Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara wanted to extradite her to Gambia. To protect her, the International Federation of Journalists engaged around the clock personal protection . Tangara disagreed with this allegation and said that on the contrary, he wanted to protect her.

After Yahya Jammeh was voted out of the Gambia presidential elections in 2016 , she returned to Gambia in 2017 and worked as an advisor to the Minister for Communication and Information, Demba A. Jawo .

In July 2019, she testified before the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC). She reported on self-censorship and pressure on the newsroom under President Yahya Jammeh .

Sosseh married a Malian and therefore also has Malian citizenship.
