Madi MK Ceesay

Madi MK Ceesay (* 1957 in Perai ) is a journalist and politician in the West African state of Gambia and a leading activist for press freedom . He was President of the Gambia Press Union (GPU).

Life

After attending primary school in Kerewan Samba Sira and Brikama Ba and secondary school in Latri Kunda , he went to Yundum College . In 1976, Ceesay was hired as a teacher for a year. He then worked for a cooperative, in the hotel business and in a hospital before moving to journalism.

From 1996 Ceesay worked for the weekly magazine Gambia News & Report , before he worked as a freelancer for the magazine (from 1993/94). He first worked as a reporter and later as deputy editor-in-chief. In April 2001 the GPU was elected as vice president. The Association of Health Journalists was formed in June 2001, with Ceesay serving as president. In March 2005, Ceesay was elected President of the GPU.

In 2006, Ceesay retired from News & Report and became General Manager of The Independent . The Independent was shut down by the government and Ceesay and Musa Saidykhan were imprisoned for a period by the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) in March 2006 . In October of the same year he received the International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists .

In 2006, Ceesay founded the Media Agenda and became its director. For another term at the GPU, Ceesay was no longer available in 2008 and Ndey Tapha Sosseh was elected as the new president. From 2009 Ceesay was editor-in-chief and publisher of the Daily News , which he founded and first appeared on April 6, 2009.

In the 2017 parliamentary election , Ceesay ran as a candidate for the United Democratic Party (UDP) in the Serekunda West constituency in the Kanifing Administrative Region . With 48.43% he was able to win the constituency before Samba Jatta (APRC) for himself.
