Emil Touray

Bai Emil Touray (mostly: Emil Touray ) is a journalist in the West African state of Gambia , he is President of the Gambia Press Union (GPU).

Life

Touray began his journalistic work in 1999, in 2001 he worked for the government-affiliated newspaper The Daily Observer , where he was responsible for reports from the court. With a group of around a dozen employees at the Daily Observer, he publicly resigned his service in July 2001, they protested against the constant political interference at work. On June 15, 2009, Touray was arrested for "inflammatory publications".

At the end of March 2005, Touray, who meanwhile worked for the Foroyaa , was elected to the board as deputy general secretary of the Gambia Press Union (GPU). In this position he, meanwhile editor-in-chief at Foroyaa, was confirmed in the following election in 2008.

On June 15, 2009, Bai Emil Touray was arrested along with six other journalists, allegedly because he was critical of a statement made by President Jemmh . The first court hearing took place on June 18 and another was on June 22. After several more days of trial, the verdict was pronounced at the beginning of August, the journalists were each sentenced to two years in prison and a fine of US $ 10,000. They were detained in the Old Jeshwang Prison .

After several public petitions from various organizations, the journalists, including Emil Touray, were pardoned by President Jammeh.

Bai Emil Touray was elected President of the GPU at the end of June 2011 to succeed Ndey Tapha Sosseh .
