Dementium: Die Anstalt (English original title: Dementium: The Ward ) is a first-person shooter developed by the Texan development studio Renegade Kid , which was released on April 17, 2009 in Europe exclusively for the Nintendo DS .

action

The first person shooter takes place in a hospital called Redmoor Hospital . The main character William Redmoor wakes up in his hospital room after a nightmare. He doesn't remember who he is or how he got into the room. As the game progresses, William learns that he allegedly killed his wife, Elizabeth Redmoor. In most of the cut scenes , which occur relatively often, a little girl named Amanda appears, who is the daughter of William Redmoor and his wife.

Gameplay

Dementium: The institution supports complete 3D environments, which include a hospital with an inner courtyard, basement and roof. Unlockable map elements that have to be collected during the game make orientation easier. Originally, the game should also include a multiplayer mode. However, this was left out in order to better concentrate on the single player campaign, according to Jools Watsham, co-owner of "Renegade Kid". The existing weapon set contains a total of eight weapons and usable items, including a flashlight. This casts a realistic cone of light, which is calculated in real time. An interesting aspect of the weapon system is, among other things, the fact that every weapon not only has special properties (for example there is a built-in night vision device), but that different opponents also react differently to the respective weapon.

successor

At the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2009 it was officially announced that a successor to Dementium: The Institution with the name "Dementium 2" will appear. The release in North America was May 4th 2010, in Germany June 15th 2010.

criticism

Dementium: The institution was largely rated as good, but the storage system and the monotonous environment were criticized.

"With a little more variety and a checkpoint system, there would be a lot more splatter fun"

"The developers really got the most out of the hardware and managed to create a dense atmosphere"
