The Dendy ( Russian: Де́нди) is a stationary game console of the third generation of consoles , which came on December 18, 1992 exclusively in the Russian Federation on the market. It is an unlicensed clone of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES for short), which, however, was not officially offered in Russia. The devices were manufactured by the Chinese company Steepler , which later appeared in Russia as Dendy.

The Dendy was probably launched on the Russian market on December 18, 1992. The device quickly enjoyed great popularity and was brought closer to potential customers right from the start with a large advertising campaign . The target group were children between the ages of 8 and 14 years. At launch , the price was about 39,000 rubles (about $ 94.00 ). The logo , an elephant , was designed by Ivan Maksimov .
Around one million consoles had been delivered by mid-1994, and around 100,000 to 125,000 units were sold per month. The turnover was about 5,000,000.00 US dollars. The selling price dropped over time to the equivalent of about $ 30.00 to $ 35.00.
In November 1994, Steepler and Dendy signed a contract that guaranteed Nintendo the exclusive distribution rights of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES for short) for the Russian market. Sega was therefore not allowed to sell its competitor product, Mega Drive . In addition, no further sale of the Dendys was made, but the distribution of game modules was still permitted. Around 1996 Dendy was dissolved.
Technical specifications
The hardware corresponded to the original NES except for a few details. It is not known how high the degree of compatibility is.
Device variants
The cases all more or less corresponded to the Nintendo Family Computer (Famicom) . However, there were several variants that differed mainly in the connections.
