Denise Wyss (* 11. September 1965 in Solothurn , Switzerland ) received in 2000 the first woman in the Old Catholic Church the priesthood , becoming the first Old Catholic priest Switzerland.

Life

Denise Wyss grew up in Solothurn as a member of the Roman Catholic Church and graduated in 1984. From 1986 to 1988 she studied Roman Catholic theology at the University of Lucerne , but felt less and less comfortable in the hierarchical-patriarchal structure of the Roman Church. She took part in protests by feminist students, but never identified with feminist theology, which she felt was a limitation.

Eventually she broke off her studies and left the Roman Catholic Church at the same time. In 1990 she converted to the Christian Catholic Church and completed her theology studies in 1995 at the Christian Catholic theological faculty of the University of Bern . In 1997 she was ordained a deaconess in Solothurn and passed her practical state examination in 1998. For the next two years she was the parish leader in the Christian Catholic parish of Trimbach and, from 1999, a deacon and parish leader in the parish of Baden-Brugg.

On February 19, 2000, she was ordained a priestess in the Franciscan Church in Solothurn. The event brought the Christian Catholic Church into the media like never before. The main edition of the Tagesschau of Swiss television reported in detail about it, Denise Wyss was portrayed in detail in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung , the Tages-Anzeiger and the Sunday newspaper , among others the Aargauer Zeitung , the Neue Luzerner Zeitung and the Tribune de Genève reported on her ordination . The event was mentioned by Vatican Radio and frauennews.de.

After her ordination, she was parish administrator and parish leader in the Christian Catholic parishes of Baden-Brugg and Aarau. In 2004 she resigned from the community service in order to train herself further in system work and trauma healing and to set up her own practice as a psychological-spiritual advisor and seminar leader. However, she remained a member of the clergy and took over representations and casualia as a priestess.

In 2007, in addition to her practice, she resumed part-time work as a priestess in the Obermumpf-Wallbach parish. Since November 1, 2008, she has also been a pastor in the Laufen parish. Since July 2014 she has taken over the parish of the Christian Catholic parish of Baselland in addition to the parish of Laufen.

Denise Wyss has been the most famous minister of the Christian Catholic Church in Switzerland since she was ordained a priest. She is particularly mentioned, for example, when she preaches in the context of ecumenical services and cited in the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern and even mentioned in a Peruvian monthly.
