The monument to the Great Elector is a monument that stands in the East Westphalian city ​​of Minden . It is located at the Weser Gate and thus at the old eastern entrance to the city, where the ford used to cross the Weser and today the Weser Bridge directs traffic over the Weser.

history

The memorial shows Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg , Margrave of Brandenburg, Elector of the Holy Roman Empire and Duke in Prussia, who was nicknamed "the Great Elector" from 1675. It commemorates the annexation of the Minden monastery to Brandenburg-Prussia in 1648 as part of the Peace of Westphalia . A plaque on the base bears the inscription Gedenke that you are a German. The Great Elector with the wrong year 1648 ; correct would be 1658.

The memorial was ceremoniously unveiled on June 18, 1901 by the people of Minden. It was designed by the sculptor Haverkamp from Berlin. The memorial has been at the Wesertor since October 21, 1949. Here it was initially at the bridge gate north of the bridge approach, in 1976 it was moved to the south side of the bridge approach as part of the reconstruction work on the Weser bridge and the road renovation. The Berlin architect Werner March was responsible for the redesign after the war .

The bronze monument stands on a light sandstone plinth.

A copy of the statue, which was unveiled in front of the Naval Academy in Kiel on June 21, 1901 , was destroyed in the Second World War.

The monument is entered in the list of monuments of the city of Minden .
