The Monument to the Victory of the Inhabitants of Slavonia or Monument to the People's Heroes of Slavonia ( Serbo-Croatian : Spomenik revolucionarnoj pobjedi naroda Slavonije, Spomenik narodu-heroju Slavonije ) was a monument to the Yugoslav resistance in World War II . The monument designed by Vojin Bakić was located in Kamenska in Croatian Slavonia . During the war in Croatia it was destroyed to the ground in 1992.

Image of the erection of the monument

The construction of the monument took over a decade from 1957 to 1968. The inauguration took place on November 9, 1968 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the founding of the 6th Slavonian Corps of Yugoslav Partisans. Thousands of onlookers attended the inauguration by the Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito and his wife Jovanka . At the time of the inauguration, the monument was the largest postmodern sculpture in the world at a height of 30 m . The cladding of the work of art was made of stainless steel , which had to be imported from Sweden at great expense. Bakić also used reflective cladding made of stainless steel on the monument in Petrova Gora , which was erected several years later .

On February 21, 1992, the memorial was destroyed by soldiers from the recently established Croatian army . The massive concrete structure had previously withstood several attempts at destruction with explosives . The exact background of the destruction remains unclear. Perhaps the Croatian soldiers discovered a monument in the Serb - nationalist motive and therefore brought it to case.
