Denys Walentynowytsch Beresowskyj ( Ukrainian Денис Валентинович Березовський , born July 15, 1974 in Kharkiv , Ukrainian SSR ) is a former Ukrainian Rear Admiral and Commander of the Ukrainian Navy .

Life

Berezovskyi was the commander of the frigate Hetman Sahajdachny , the flagship of the Ukrainian Navy , between 2002 and 2005 . On December 6, 2012, he was promoted to Rear Admiral in Kiev and appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Navy on March 1, 2014 by interim president Oleksandr Turchynow as successor to Yuri I Ilyin.

Defector

On March 2, 2014, one day after his appointment, he opposed the Ukrainian interim government that had been formed a few days earlier . He announced to follow the orders of the Commander-in-Chief of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and protect the life and freedom of the Crimean residents. Berezovskyi ordered the Ukrainian Navy to surrender to the Russian armed forces. According to a report by Ukrajinska Pravda , on March 3, 2014, together with Russian military personnel, Berezovskyi came to high-ranking officers of the Ukrainian navy in order to induce them to serve in the Russian armed forces under "the promise of high remuneration". He was then dismissed by the Ukrainian interim government. The Ukrainian public prosecutor's office initiated proceedings for treason . Serhiy Hajduk was appointed as his successor .

Because of his role in the accession of Crimea, the European Union put him on a sanctions list in April 2014 . He is therefore subject to an entry ban and an asset freeze.

He has been deputy commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet since April 20, 2014 .
